Will Airports Play a Major Gameplay Role in GTA VI?
Airports in GTA VI may turn out to be far more than just background scenery. Given the sheer scale of the map, aviation infrastructure is expected to play a meaningful role in gameplay — and likely not in a limited way.
According to information mentioned in the 2022 leaks, multiple airports are expected to exist across the game world. This idea is further supported by the first trailer, where passenger airplanes can be seen several times, hinting that commercial aviation is an active part of the world rather than simple decoration.
Fast Travel Through Airports
If implemented properly, airports could become a natural method of fast travel across long distances - similar to how trains were used in Red Dead Redemption 2. Instead of teleport menus, Rockstar may once again rely on immersive transportation systems embedded directly into the game world.
Fully Interactive Interiors
One of the most interesting possibilities is that each airport could feature a fully explorable interior with interactive functionality. Rockstar last experimented with detailed airport interiors back in GTA Vice City, and since then, airports in the series have largely been inaccessible or simplified.
Bringing this concept back would mark a notable return to deeper environmental interaction — something modern Rockstar titles are increasingly known for.
A Gateway to Future Expansions
There’s also a longer-term perspective to consider. Industry insider Jason Schreier previously mentioned the possibility of GTA VI expanding over time, with new regions added post-launch. If that approach becomes reality, airports could serve as in-world gateways to new locations and content.
A similar idea once existed in Red Dead Redemption 2, where the island of Guarma was planned to be freely accessible via a purchasable boat ticket from Saint Denis — though the feature was ultimately cut.
Rockstar decides to revive and evolve that concept, airports in GTA VI may become a key gameplay mechanic rather than just visual set pieces, tying transportation, exploration, and future updates into a single system.
